As International Book Donation Day approaches, celebrated on February 14, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) is promoting a book collection campaign. Members of the academic community and the public outside the University are invited to participate in the initiative that will receive donations during this month to be donated to the Escola Estadual Professora Marta Maria Castanho Almeida Pernambuco, located in Ceará-Mirim.
The campaign’s collection point will operate at the headquarters of the UFRN Department of Distance Education (SEDIS), which is located on the Central Campus, close to the University Chapel. The idea is for people to take advantage of the opportunity to get to know the location of the Secretariat that manages the University’s Distance Education (EaD). According to the EaD/UFRN secretary, Carmem Rêgo, “it is important to encourage the donation of new and used books, as they can make a difference in the lives of many people”.
The school was built within the Rosário Settlement, in the municipality of the Metropolitan Region of Natal, and serves an audience of elementary and high school students, also working with Youth and Adult Education (EJA). Marta Pernambuco, after whom the educational establishment is named, passed away in May 2018 and was a defender of the democratization of access to public education. She was a professor at the Education Center (CE / UFRN) and a professor at the Postgraduate Program in Education (PPGED / UFRN). She supervised dissertations and theses, coordinated projects and research groups in the areas of science teaching and pedagogical proposals based on Paulo Freire, among them, environmental education, rural education and distance education.
