Last month, in the United States, another edition of the Colorado State Fair took place, and this time things got a little more tense than usual. The reason? A digital painting created by artificial intelligence took first place trophy.

Created by Jason M. Allen, an artist and video game designer from Pueblo West, Colorado, used a program called Midjourney to create the winning work. The software in question transforms lines of text into realistic images, which in turn indicates that the inspiration that spawned this year’s champion art came from Allen’s mind. However, for many people on the internet, this does not seem to be enough.

AI-generated art wins competition and generates discussion on the web

While other competitors used graphics tablets or tablet software, for example, Jason M. Allen took a different route. Using only his creativity, he described what he envisioned and the Midjourney program turned the text into a beautiful imageresulting in a mixture of Renaissance painting with the steampunk movement.

Entitled “Theater D’Opera Spatial“, the image won the trophy in the Digital Arts/Digitally Manipulated Photographs category — whose definition indicates that it encompasses works that use “digital technologies as part of the creative or presentation process”. Allen believes he has justly won; for him, Midjourney was used to create the image he, the artist, described.

Happy with the victory, the game designer decided to publish his feat on the internet and ended up getting a little different feedback than he probably expected. On Twitter, users used the social network space to give their opinion on what had happened. One user likened Allen’s victory to “letting robots participate in the Olympics“; another suggested that the painting was the result of a simple “press of a few buttons”. There were many comments, and most of them were quite negative.

The artist, however, has a different opinion. “It’s not like you just punch words together and win competitions,” he said. Allen explains that took more than 80 hours to arrive at the result of the three images you sent to the competition. Flirting with the idea of mix a Victorian style with the space themehe managed to generate more than 900 images until he reached the final three that he used at the fair.

Digital art is also art

In addition to the use of Artificial Intelligence software, the creation of the arts sent to the Colorado State Fair also involved the use of image editors such as Photoshop. Even though Midjourney is a powerful tool, the program is not perfect and sometimes it leaves something to be desired when rendering certain details. That’s where the artist’s hand comes in, who, in this particular case, came to need to add heads to some of the figures, which were rendered with nothing above the neck.

Allen is happy with his art have generated discussion About the subject. “Instead of hating the technology or the people behind it, we need to recognize that it is a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward instead of complaining about it,” says the artist.
