The Italian government finalizes a 1.5 billion euro deal with SpaceX to achieve secure satellite communications, very similar to a program the European Union just launched.

In addition, the project includes the implementation of direct satellite-to-cell phone services (telephone tower in the destination area), designed to guarantee communications in emergency situations, such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks.

The agreement has already had the support of the Italian intelligence services and the Ministry of Defense, according to Agency Bloombergwhich cites that it also generated some opposition within the country due to the possibility of negatively affecting local telecommunications companies. The leak also occurs shortly after the launch of the project Iris of the European Commission, which will create a constellation of 290 mini-satellites like those of Starlink to guarantee communications from European governments.

The European program is endowed with 10.6 billion euros and arises precisely from the concern generated in Brussels and in several executives of the bloc, as expressed by the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, due to the fact that the SpaceX dominate this new telecommunications sector without opposition.

If confirmed, it would be the first contract of its kind in Europa and a boost for SpaceX.
