According to Phoenix Fire Captain Rob McDade, the twins’ father found his daughters in the pool. It took firefighters less than three minutes to reach the home and found family members desperately trying to administer CPR. Aerial photos of the three-bedroom house show the pool had no fence. “You can imagine what it would be like, how draining it would be,” McDade told local CBS 5 News. “A tremendously tragic scene,” he lamented. Police confirmed the incident is not considered suspicious, but the investigation remains ongoing.

How to avoid drowning

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in the world in the age group between 1 and 4 years and the third in the age group between 5 and 14 years. Because it is quick and silent, this type of incident can turn the lives of many families into a nightmare. To avoid a tragedy, it is essential to take some precautions to protect your child from dangerous situations in the water. Check out!

Watchful look

It is essential to remember that drowning is a quick occurrence, so vigilance is the main care. Therefore, children should never be left alone on beaches, swimming pools and bathtubs. Furthermore, it is important not to leave containers with water or other liquids where the child can submerge, as just 2.5 cm of liquid in a container can be enough to cause a disaster. This also applies to children who already know how to swim well. Parents should always exercise intense monitoring and avoid distractions, such as cell phone use. Another interesting point is to invest in first aid training, even for those who do not work in the health sector.

Life jacket

When taking children to the beach or pool, it is important to remember that using a life jacket is more recommended than arm buoys. However, be careful, as the use of safety vests is excellent, but they can cause a false sense of security. So, even when using this equipment, it is worth emphasizing that children should never be left without adult supervision in swimming pools and beaches.

Fenced pools

Parents who have swimming pools at home need to pay extra attention. Swimming pools must be completely fenced, without openings and with a height of around 1.5m, in addition to having non-slip floors around them. The same fencing must be carried out if you have wells at home or on farms and farms. Furthermore, the pool must be covered with several secure side latches that the child cannot remove.

Get your child into swimming

According to the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP), babies can begin the practice after six months of life, as at this stage of life, the ear is at a stage of development that reduces the risk of water entry and infections, in addition to child has already received the first immunization vaccines.

However, children should never enter the water unsupervised, even if they already know how to swim well. It’s also worth remembering that you don’t need a large amount of water for little ones to be placed in a dangerous situation.

Drownings are often silent. Pay attention to warning signs such as: not being able to keep your head entirely out of the water, an expression of panic or fear and a vertical body with head tilted back and mouth open, an instinctive attempt to continue breathing.
