José Occhiuso was fired from SBT
SBT fired this Friday (3) José Occhiuso, national director of Journalism who had been at the broadcaster for more than 13 years. He had held the top leadership of the sector since 2017, but was notified today of his dismissal. The reason, according to the column’s sources, is the audience factor, as all news programs on the schedule currently struggle to compete with the competition.
Occhiuso was one of Silvio Santos’ trusted professionals, and he followed his boss’s most outrageous orders without questioning — even if he didn’t agree with many of them. The hiring of Dudu Camargo and his long stay in Journalism is an example. The former director responded to the station owner’s request to transform the boy into a news anchor, even though he was against his arrival in the sector from day one.
What contributed to his departure was the fact that all the programs under his responsibility were not performing well in the audience. Due to the new grid designed by Daniela Beyruti, Journalism ended up receiving a large investment to improve scenarios, equipment and even expansion of teams.
In a statement sent to the press, SBT confirmed Occhiuso’s dismissal, but did not indicate the reasons. He only said that the decision was made by mutual agreement. See the note in full:
“The communications department informs that SBT and journalist Jose Occhiuso decided, by consensus, to terminate the contract between the parties.
SBT is grateful for all of José Occhiuso’s dedication, professionalism and commitment over the years, in a partnership full of remarkable moments, achievements and mutual admiration, leaving the doors open for the journalist, who moves on to new professional projects.
José Occhiuso joined the broadcaster in 2011, starting his work as executive editor of SBT Brasil. He then held the same position at Jornal do SBT. In October 2013, he took over as director of journalism in Brasília, a position he held until the beginning of 2017.
Back in São Paulo, Occhiuso took over the national direction of journalism, implementing changes at SBT Brasil, promoting debates in the 2018 elections, and boosting the department.
In 2020, during the pandemic, SBT’s news programs did not stop and produced content under its coordination, informing the public of the latest news about Covid, supporting all programming. At the same time, he also coordinated the partnership between the journalism and digital departments, in addition to the creation of the news portal SBT News, which, in 2023, gained space in SBT’s programming with a live news program during the early hours of the morning.
Recently, José Occhiuso participated in the renewal of SBT Brasil with the hiring of César Filho and the development of the new scenario.”
