Back in the top-100, Thiago Monteiro remains in great shape. This Friday morning (10), the Brazilian returned to the Italian clay to compete in the round of 32 of the Masters 1000 in Rome. Monteiro faced Australian Jordan Thompson, and won the match 2-0 (6/1 and 6/3). This is the tennis player’s fourth singles victory of the tournament, and his eighth in the last nine games.

Playing as an underdog again, Thiago Monteiro, number 95 in the live ATP rankings, faced the current 37th ranked player in the world. Even so, the Brazilian’s great moment prevailed in the confrontation, and Monteiro achieved the triumph without many difficulties. Previously, the two tennis players had faced each other twice, with one victory each.

The game started with absolute dominance from Thiago Monteiro. The Brazilian imposed intensity and broke Thompson’s serve twice in the first half to take a 5-1 lead. In the next game, Monteiro recovered from 0-40 and saved four break-points to win the dispute. The highlight of the first set was a beautiful point from the Brazilian with a Lobby Tweener, a move in which the tennis player hits the ball between his legs while facing away from his opponent.

In the second half, Monteiro continued to complicate Thompsom’s life, especially with the Australian’s serves. In the fifth game, the Brazilian broke the opponent’s serve without losing any points. On Thompson’s next serve, Monteiro still had two more break-points in his favor, but wasted them. There was no foul, and the Brazilian closed the match with another break to win 6-3.

Upcoming clashes

Qualified for the next stage at the Masters 1000 in Rome, Thiago Monteiro will face the winner of the clash between Casper Ruud, from Norway, and Miomir Kecmanovic, from Serbia. The Norwegian is currently number 7 in the world, while the Serbian is 57th in the ranking. Finally, the match is scheduled for this Sunday (12), but with a time to be defined.
