The men’s and women’s module I basketball teams from Indyu school, with athletes aged 12 to 14, became two-time champions of the Montes Claros municipal stage at the Minas Gerais School Games (JEMG), guaranteeing a place in the micro-regional stage.

Next week, the technical team, teachers and athletes from Indyu will head to the city of Brasília de Minas to compete, between May 13th and 19th, for a place in the regional phase. JEMG is divided into 4 stages: municipal, microregional, regional and state and takes place annually through a partnership between the state government and city halls.

According to Indyu professor Rubem Ribeiro, it is a great pride to start the year with several achievements “We have formed a team assembled a year and a half ago, including in Brasília de Minas where we went for the first time last year and we became champions in the micro-regional. Then we competed in the regional and state phase. This year we continued to put on a real show, including in the first game this year”, he says.

The teacher and coach makes a point of emphasizing that all the athletes are boys discovered and trained at Indyu.

“They started from scratch and today we are proud to know that they play well, with a lot of talent and above all, scholars with excellent grades. Our basketball sports school here in Indyu is proud because we promote interaction and socialization between different students and with other cities. With this, we are producing good results, titles, students with good grades and setting an example for other schools”, adds the professor.

ATHLETES
Thirteen-year-old athlete Thauanne Xavier, who is in her 8th year at Indyu, says that she is very happy to be part of the basketball team. “It’s a lot of happiness to be here. In 2023, which was my first year in basketball, I scored and I didn’t think that would happen. All the work required dedication, willpower, training, encouragement from the coach, encouragement from parents and colleagues. It was a really good feeling and a big achievement for me,” she says.

Thaunne also reinforces that playing the sport has helped in the classroom and provided better performance in grades and relaxation “Playing basketball makes us de-stressed and calmer. Sport is good for everything. If we train close to exam week, we can relax and focus on our studies.”

The athlete makes a point of reinforcing that everyone is focused on seeking the title and willing to make every effort to move on to the next stage.

“The expectation from now on is to do our best. If you win, perfect! But if not, we will be victorious anyway. It is a huge responsibility to represent our city and our school abroad. I will fight until the end to achieve my goals”, concludes Thauanne.

BENEFITS OF SPORT
Indyu’s Physical Education Teacher, Edward Martins, highlights that there are many benefits that competitions like JEMG provide to student training. “It is an important event, as, in addition to improving sporting skills and revealing talents, it contributes to interaction, socialization and stimulation of improved academic performance”, said the coach.

Students from municipal, state and private schools, aged between 12 and 17, participate in the JEMG.
