Aston Martin had a qualifying session for the Formula 1 Miami GP, much lower than the team expected, with Lance Stroll taking P11 and Fernando Alonso taking P15.

Mike Krack, team principal: “We lost the maximum pace to compete today. The margins are small and Lance missed the opportunity to reach Q3 with Fernando a few tenths behind. We will do a review tonight and see where we can improve for tomorrow. The Sprint race was disappointing with both drivers stuck in the middle of a four-car sandwich on the entry to turn one. Damage to Lance’s floor and suspension forced his retirement, while Fernando resumed to give us some valuable tire learnings. We have seen how difficult it can be to make progress here with the DRS trains making overtaking very challenging, but we will fight hard to score some points,” he concluded.

Stroll: “It was a frustrating day on the track. My Sprint race ended on the first lap after contact with other cars. It was an unfortunate incident, but there wasn’t much I could do. In the qualifying session, the car simply didn’t have the pace we needed. It was disappointing to lose Q3 by such small margins, but we were struggling to improve throughout Q2 and I didn’t have the confidence I needed in the car. We will try to find a little more rhythm for tomorrow’s race and hope to be able to fight for some points in Miami”, he added.

Alonso: “It was a disappointing day for us. Firstly, there was the incident at Turn 1 at the start of the Sprint, and then we had a difficult qualifying session for tomorrow’s race. We struggled in Q1 and Q2 and finished 15th in both sessions. There didn’t seem to be much pace and this time we were out of the group to fight for the top ten. We’ve made some changes to the setup since the Sprint race and it appears those changes didn’t work. I believe that tomorrow will be a challenging race, but we will analyze our performance tonight and try to recover some points”, concluded the Spaniard.
