The president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues, stated this Friday that any stoppage in Brazilian football depends on the clubs. The leader gave the response when informed that the Minister of Sports, André Fufuca (PP/MA), sent a letter to the entity asking for the suspension of the championships due to the tragedy of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul.

— Every decision regarding a competition — starting, having, suspending, extending, postponing — the CBF will discuss jointly with the clubs. The power of the CBF is not a supreme and absolute power. It’s a limited power — said Ednaldo.

The CBF president stated that the decision on the Brazilian football calendar involves the Club Technical Council, which includes all teams in each competition organized by the entity. Therefore, the leader added that he does not alone determine a possible strike.

— We respect all segments of the Government very much, but the entire construction of Brazilian football is carried out by a Technical Council of clubs, this involves all competitions. The Technical Council must meet. When defining a competition, the CBF holds Technical Council meetings for Series A, B, C, D and base competitions. If a strike is requested, we will inform each club, each series of these clubs, so that they can take a position in relation to the document from the Ministry of Sports. And from there, if necessary, bring together the Technical Council so that they can deliberate. “Look, can we stop all the competition?” — he stated.

Ednaldo Rodrigues also considered that, if the championships in Brazil are paralyzed, Conmebol’s international competitions would continue, including in the decisive stretch of the Libertadores and Sul-Americana. The director highlighted that he is in direct contact with the clubs in Rio Grande do Sul, which had their matches postponed.

— What was requested by the clubs, through the Gaucho Federation, the CBF fully complied with. Which was the postponement of their games until May 27th. Everything that happens from now on we will have to talk to the clubs and all football divisions.

In the letter sent to the CBF this Friday, the Minister of Sports states that he considers the suspension of the Brasileirão important because of those affected by the tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul.

— In view of the catastrophe that follows, the request is necessary far beyond football stadiums, training fields, concentration camps and the physical location where everyone involved in sport circulates, but for all the people, families and loved ones who donate at this time in the survival and reconstruction of houses and everything else affected — says an excerpt from the letter signed by André Fufuca.
