The rain that has hit Rio Grande do Sul since April 27th should only stop next Monday (6). The forecast from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).
Rio Grande do Sul faces some of the worst rainfall in history. The death toll reaches 31. The government declared a state of public calamity due to the storms.
“Until May 5th (Sunday), strong winds are expected with gusts above 60 km/h, the occurrence of electrical discharges, possible hail and heavy rains that can exceed 100 millimeters (mm) between the north of the state gaucho and the south of Santa Catarina”, highlights the Metsul newsletter.
Inmet explains that the period between the end of April and the beginning of May 2024 is still influenced by El Niño. The phenomenon responsible for warming the waters of the Pacific, helped to block the cold fronts and concentrate the systems of areas of instability at the height of Rio Grande do Sul, causing the most intense rain in part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and south of Santa Catarina in recent days.
“In addition to this condition, the much higher temperature of the South Atlantic Ocean, close to the equatorial band, also contributes to humidity, intensifying rainfall. The transport of moisture from the Amazon and the thermal contrast with the warmer air to the north of the South Region, in addition to colder air to the south of Rio Grande do Sul also helped to strengthen the storms”, he informs.
