On the day that fans celebrate the “Star Wars” saga, May 4, the Checamos project addresses a question that has been circulating for years, both on social media and beyond. Would the character Darth Vader have said “Luke, I am your father” in one of the franchise’s films? The answer is no. Or rather, more or less.

The villain revealed his paternity to young Skywalker in the final minutes of the film “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back”, released in 1980. But he does not call his son by name when making the revelation. Darth Vader just says, “I am your father,” without mentioning Luke. Phrases that marked the series, like this one — and the most classic, “may the force be with you” — are the subject of internet discussion forums.

The dialogue begins with Vader, questioning Luke, after cutting off his right hand: “Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father?” Then the Jedi responds, “He told me enough. He told me you killed him.” Then the villain replies: “No. I’m your father.”

At the time of the film’s release, the information was a turning point for fans, who at that time had few clues to discover the family relationship between the good guy and the villain.

Tributes

The revelation of Darth Vader’s paternity was referenced in some works. In animation, “Toy Story 2” features a scene with Zurg and Buzz Lightyear. On the children’s channel Cartoon Network, the character Harold said “Billy, I’m your father”, with a deep voice and a tinsmith mask to convince his son to wash his hands for lunch in a commercial for “The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy ” (2001).

In the cartoon “The Fairly OddParents” there was also a tribute. In the episode “Microfonia”, released in Brazil in 2003, Chester uses a microphone that makes his voice deep to say: “Luke, I am your father”.

But not only drawings pay homage to the scene. The film “Austin Powers 2 – Agent “Bond” Cama” features a scene playing with the dialogue between Darth Vader and Luke. And there’s even music: “Luke, Sou Seu Pai” is the title of a song by the Brazilian band Os Seminovos.
