“A big heart”: Bruce Willis’ admirable gesture on the first day of filming for The Sixth Sense – Cinema news

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment and Toni Collette, The Sixth Sense was nominated for no less than six Oscars – including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Colette) and Best Supporting Actor (Osment).

And speaking of Haley Joel, during an awards ceremony in 1999, the actor shared a funny and touching story about Willis, recalling the first day of filming the thriller film.

“The first day of filming took place at the end of a very hot summer, and we were filming on location pretending it was a cool autumn day. Bruce was wearing a trench coat, I was wearing a heavy jacket and it was very hot and humid. […] Everyone was focused on their work – so focused that no one heard the doorbell of an ice cream vendor on the next block. No one except Bruce.”

Bruce walked to the end of the street and grabbed the closest and most trusted aide. The aide went to the nearest police officer and, in an instant, sirens sounded in the distance, chasing the unsuspecting and good-natured man – who discovered that he was going to hand out ice cream to everyone who came to see [Bruce]. And Bruce Willis paid for the entire neighborhood. The guy didn’t leave until everyone ate their ice cream. Well, not everyone…

Taking a (falsely) emotional pause, the young actor continued the story: “I was working, I was doing a scene with Bruce and of course I had to keep working, and I didn’t get anything. People asked me how I did all those crying scenes, well, I kept thinking about that first day of work. Everyone got ice cream, everyone except me.”

Finally, the actor concludes: “Bruce, thank you for saving the world one moment and sharing a tear with me the next. You were destined to become larger than life because you had a big heart.”
