With touches of horror, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin will be a science fiction set in a post-apocalyptic future.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, has been adapted in many different ways over the years. We have, as examples, the animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, released in 1987, and the film of the same name from 1990. Since then, other film adaptations have been developed, such as the 2014 live-action and the 2016 film, Out of the Shadows, with Megan Fox, or, more recently, the animated film Chaos Mutante, developed by Seth Rogen.

While these later adaptations took into account how many of the 1990s Teenage Mutant Turtles fans were older and therefore more adult-oriented in terms of action and humor, they remained suitable for younger audiences, with an R-rated rating. from 10 to 12 years old.

Now, a new film in the franchise is in development and should be completely different.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin – for adults only?

Paramount announced that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin will be a new live-action film about the mutant turtles. The goal is to make the action so brutal that it could be classified as an adult film in the US. In Brazil, the film would probably be classified as suitable for those over 16 years old.

Someone who knows how to handle brutal material is also on board as a screenwriter: Tyler Burton Smith, who wrote the action film Against the World and the horror film Child’s Play, will develop the script for The Last Ronin, adapting a famous comic book miniseries from universe.

Terror with the Turtles: your heroes die

The Last Ronin is a science fiction story set in a post-apocalyptic future New York. There, Master Splinter and the Turtles are killed one after the other (!) by the grandson of their former arch-enemy Shredder. Only one of them barely survives the attempt on her own life. Now, the last Turtle swears bloody revenge and is prepared to kill a series of enemies.

One of the characteristics of the comics is that, as the surviving Turtle also uses his brothers’ weapons and always operates in the shadows, it is not known who of the quartet survived the murders. It will be interesting to see if this will be maintained and, if so, how this trick will be adapted for film.

If the story and the way it is carried out sounds a bit like a horror film, that’s no coincidence. Walter Hamada is overseeing and producing the project on behalf of Paramount. After a rather unhappy period as head of comic book adaptation company DC Films, he went back to work on his own with his own company.

After previous successes such as The Conjuring or the adaptations of It, he wants to focus on horror films with this company. The fact that now he’s doing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin probably shows that he recognizes the horror material from the original story.

It is not yet known who will direct the film. By the way, the director of Sin City, Robert Rodriguez, is a big fan of the original. He even wrote a foreword for the hardcover edition of the graphic novel. Wouldn’t that make him a candidate? However, he is best known for developing his own projects.

It is not yet known when The Last Ronin will be released. A sequel to Chaos Mutante, which was announced some time ago, is still to come. At the moment, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mayhem 2 is planned to be released in theaters in the second half of 2026.
