Government of Minas begins pavement recovery on two stretches of highways in Zona da Mata

-

The Department of Highways of Minas Gerais (DER-MG) gave the order to begin the recovery of two more stretches of highways in the Zona da Mata region. This time, the works are carried out on the AMG-0520 highway, between Aracitaba and Oliveira Fortes, and on the MG-452, between Paiva and Oliveira Fortes.

The interventions are part of Provias, an initiative by the Government of Minas Gerais

which represents the largest set of investments in the state’s road network in the last decade.

With resources of more than R$20 million, the works promote improvements for around five thousand people in the municipalities of Aracitaba, Oliveira Fortes and Paiva. Another 200,000 people will benefit indirectly, considering the area of influence of the highways. The contemplated section of MG-452 connects BRs 040 and 262, shortening paths and providing more mobility for the region.

DER-MG teams began carrying out functional recovery services for MG-452. Subsequently, a new work front will be opened at AMG-0520.

The general director of DER-MG, Rodrigo Tavares, explains that to receive new asphalt, the highways undergo damage corrections and recycling on the existing pavement and, finally, receive a new asphalt layer. “In addition to functional recovery services, existing erosion recovery services will be carried out along the two segments”, he illustrates.

Authorized in February this year, the works should be completed by February 2025, according to the contractual deadline. Around 44 direct jobs and another 128 indirect jobs will be created in the region during the execution of the services.

Provias

Considered the largest road recovery and paving program of the last decade, Provias aims to reverse the precarious situation in which many highways in Minas Gerais find themselves due to the low investment made by previous administrations in road maintenance.

The program has almost R$4 billion in investments, which are being applied to 124 interventions on highways from North to South of Minas Gerais.

Provias is divided into two axes: functional recovery, with the aim of promoting improvements in the pavement of roads in the worst state of conservation, and paving and construction of bridges, with a focus on enabling new connections between important regions of the state.

The program has the potential to add R$1.3 billion to Minas Gerais’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and increase revenue from indirect taxes by around R$225 million.
