Number of homeless doubles in 24 hours in Rio Grande do Sul

The number of homeless people in Rio Grande do Sul more than doubled in 24 hours, going from more than 163 thousand this Wednesday (8) to 327,105 this Thursday (9), according to the latest bulletin from the state Civil Defense, with data released at 6pm. These are people who, at some point, had to leave their homes and seek shelter in the homes of relatives, friends or in public shelters.ebc.gif?id=1594394&o=node

In total, 1.74 million people from Rio Grande do Sul have already been affected in some way by the floods, that is, they have lost their homes and are without electricity, water or food.

In relation to the municipalities affected, the number reaches 431, equivalent to more than 80% of the cities in the state.

Deaths caused by the rains reach 107. There are 134 missing and 754 injured.

Rain and cold

Authorities are on alert for the worsening situation in the state.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) predicts heavy rain in Rio Grande do Sul starting this Friday (9). The expectation is that it will last until Sunday (12) with greater intensity between the center-north and east of the state, including the north coast and south of Santa Catarina.

The level of the Guaíba River is below 5 meters, but the rivers in the south of the state have begun to rise and overflow.
