A survey released by the Department of Assistance to Vulnerable Groups (DAGV) of the Civil Police revealed that in the last 12 years the elderly population of Sergipe grew by around 58%. Given this increase, the authorities are concerned that crimes committed against this group will increase more and more.

Information provided by the Coordination of Statistics and Criminal Analysis (Ceacrim) of the Public Security Secretariat (SSP/SE), last year, 214 cases of violence against the elderly were recorded in the state. In 2024, in just the first three months, around 34 cases of crimes were registered against this portion of Sergipe’s population.

Among the most recurrent crimes recorded in the state are exposing the integrity and physical or mental health of an elderly person to risk and appropriating the victim’s assets, earnings and income.

Delegate Nayanna Batalha, member of the Department of Assistance to Vulnerable Groups (DAGV), highlights that the highest incidence of crimes committed against elderly people are committed by aggressors who have an emotional relationship with the victim.

“And when the victim realizes that they are in this cycle of violence, they have difficulty breaking it and seeking out the police authorities to report it, as the aggressor is a person with an emotional bond,” he explained.

Complaint

The police reinforce that crimes against elderly people can be reported to the DAGV, which has the Office for Assistance to the Elderly and People with Disabilities (DEAIPD).

Complaints can also be passed on anonymously to the police via Hotline (181). Confidentiality is guaranteed.
