Rains in SC and RS cause deaths, leave people homeless and block highways

The week that marked the end of April and the beginning of May was full of news on the ND Mais Portal. One of the highlights of the week was the high amount of rain that hit Rio Grande do Sul and also reached the state of Santa Catarina.

Biggest climate catastrophe in Rio Grande do Sul

The State of Rio Grande do Sul has been suffering from one of the worst climate catastrophes in its history.

According to the state’s Civil Defense, there are 281 municipalities affected, 8,296 people in shelters, 24,666 homeless, 74 injured, 67 missing and 57 deaths. Totaling 377,497 people affected.

The state’s highways also suffered from river floods. There are 128 stretches on 68 highways with total or partial closures, including roads and bridges.

Heavy rains caused disruption in SC

In Santa Catarina, rain hit at least 33 cities. According to the latest updates from the State Civil Defense, a death was confirmed in Ipira, as a result of heavy rains. There is also a record of an injured person in Caçador.

At least 155 people are displaced and 26 are homeless. The municipalities of Araranguá, Praia Grande and São João do Sul declared an emergency situation.

The professor of the Cinema course at UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina), Aglair Bernardo, decided to give an unusual speech at her students’ graduation ceremony.

Woman is raped after being dragged into the woods

A 42-year-old woman was dragged and raped in a bush, when she went for a walk in the early morning of May 2, in São Miguel do Oeste, in the Far-West of Santa Catarina.

According to police, the woman said she was unable to call for help. The victim was taken to the Terezinha Gaio Basso Regional Hospital, where she underwent a medical evaluation.

The two men, aged 33 and 43, were arrested on the 2nd on suspicion of the crime of rape. One of the men was approached by the garrison in the Villa Nova II neighborhood and the other in a bar in the Salete neighborhood.

The two were arrested red-handed and taken to the São Miguel do Oeste Police Station for the Protection of Children, Adolescents, Women and the Elderly.
