Rio Grande do Sul begins Sunday (5) with 55 deaths due to floods, surpassing the number of the 2023 tragedy. According to the bulletin released on Saturday (4), 74 people are still missing and 107 are injured. This is the biggest flood recorded in history, according to the state government. One mega operation was mounted to rescue the victims.

By Saturday night (4), the Military Brigade, the Civil Police and the Military Fire Department had rescued 17,965 people and 3,251 animals. The most critical locations are Eldorado do Sul, Canoas, Porto Alegre (Islands region) and São Leopoldo, which have the largest number of people stranded following the increase in river levels in the Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region.
In Serra Gaúcha alone, 431 people were rescued, 145 of them by helicopters. By land, 286 residents were taken to safe locations.

The task force involves teams from all over Brazil. From Santa Catarina alone, there are more than 30 men, 11 boats, 10 vehicles and a helicopter working to help the victims of the tragedy. A group of businesspeople also mobilized 16 aircraft to take donations to the most affected cities. Other civilian volunteers also provide support, either by working directly with those affected or by contributing donations.
Starting this Sunday (5), three humanitarian support bases will be installed in Lajeado, Santa Cruz do Sul and Santa Maria. They will receive and distribute food, drinking water, medicines and hygiene kits to isolated communities.

More than 82 thousand people are away from home
Until Saturday night, the Rio Grande do Sul Civil Defense counted 82,500 people away from home, 13,300 of whom were in shelters and 69,200 were homeless, staying in the homes of family or friends.
In total, 317 of the State’s 496 municipalities recorded some type of problem, affecting 510.5 thousand people.
