The essence and trajectory of Santa Catarina explain. What we saw in the last few days was a hug, a welcome that only good brothers are capable of giving. The cities, institutions, official bodies and people of Santa Catarina dedicated themselves to helping Rio Grande do Sul intensely. The numbers of materials collected in donations are impressive, there are tons and tons that fill trucks heading to cities in Rio Grande do Sul devastated by water. The embrace of SC in RS is an unprecedented demonstration of solidarity, and also a form of reciprocity to the moments in which the people of Rio Grande do Sul embraced the people of Santa Catarina in similar moments.

This text could refer to each of the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of collective and individual actions carried out here in the State (see photos below). From end to end of SC, even in the cities furthest from the Gauchos, there was some type of mobilization. It all started with an official stance by the State government to send military firefighters to help with rescues, an attitude that matched the needs of the neighboring State and also the relevance of the SC Military Fire Department, a reference in these cases.
Then came a sequence of donation collection initiatives. At the same pace as regions in Santa Catarina, they also noticed the movement in RS in episodes like 2008, in Vale do Itajaí. There are several municipalities in SC filling trucks with water, food and clothes to help the Gaucho brothers in the beginning of reconstruction, a slow process, but the basics are extremely necessary for everything to start happening.
What Santa Catarina has been doing and will do in the coming days is genuine, whether with a simple act of volunteering or donating food, clothing or money. It is in the essence of Santa Catarina, so hardened by the climate, but also so generous, due to the State’s trajectory. It is known that, in the face of so much damage, the support will not be enough to rebuild RS or bring lives back, but it will help put the Gaucho brothers on their feet for reconstruction.
