A team of military firefighters from Sergipe is on standby, if called upon, to assist in search, relief and assistance efforts for the population affected by the storms in Rio Grande do Sul. According to the Consórcio Nordeste, all nine states in the region have made resources available , including dozens of military firefighters, binomials (duo formed by firefighter and sniffer dog), boats, vehicles and nurses. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is also being sent, such as gloves, technical clothing, ropes and others.

Faced with demands for Sergipe’s delay in sending aid to Rio Grande do Sul, the Public Security Secretariat explained that the National Council of Fire Department Commanders asked the states to register human resources and equipment. “The State of Sergipe is at the disposal of the crisis office and, at any time, if called, within 24 hours the teams must be in Rio Grande do Sul. For now there is no boarding plan”, explains the SSP.

Rio Grande do Sul has already recorded 56 deaths due to the heavy rains that have hit the state since the beginning of the week. According to a Civil Defense bulletin, 281 municipalities were affected, leaving 8,296 people in shelters and 24,666 citizens homeless. The number of missing people reaches 67. There are still 74 injured.

Rescue work has been hampered by electricity and telecommunications cuts. Several communities in the interior of the state are isolated due to flooding and road incidents. As of Friday night (3), at least 128 sections of 68 highways were totally or partially blocked, including roads and bridges.
