RS declares a state of public calamity due to strong storms

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), declared a state of public calamity, this Wednesday, the 1st, due to the strong storms that hit the state in recent days, causing deaths, disappearances and flooding.

In a press conference held at the Civil Defense headquarters, in Porto Alegre, and broadcast on social media, the governor said that the storm “will be the biggest disaster in the state”.

Until 9 am this Thursday, the 2nd, according to the most recent bulletin released by the state government of Rio Grande do Sul, the rains had already affected 134 municipalities and caused 13 deaths. Another 21 people are missing.

The decree, published in the Official State Gazette and which will be in force for 180 days, highlights that RS is hit by intense rains, flooding, hail, floods, floods and high-intensity windstorms, being classified as Level III disasters – characterized for high damages and losses.
