Openings on the Lavras campus mark the end of the 2020-2024 administration
This week, around 20 new structures at the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) were inaugurated, marking the end of the 2020-2024 administration. Representatives of the university community attended the unveiling of the plaques for the spaces, which underwent construction, renovation, expansion or restructuring. The inaugurations took place between 4/29 and 5/3.
For the rector of UFLA, professor João Chrysostomo de Resende Júnior, these inaugurations mark the end of a management that, despite facing difficult challenges, such as budget cuts and the Covid-19 pandemic, chose to further value the Institution’s public spaces . “The University has a large number of built areas and needs all these structures to be well equipped and well used. It’s about good use of public resources and respect for the society that finances us.”
Among the spaces opened are several structures that contribute to Research, Support to the university community, Infrastructure and Culture, see below:

Laboratory of Aquatic Macrophytes and Cyanobionts
The Laboratory of Aquatic Macrophytes and Cyanbionts, located in the Department of Biology, houses an exclusive collection of cyanobacteria, some of them collected in rivers in our region.
Beef Cattle Laboratory
The laboratory will be used to carry out research on beef cattle and other large animals, such as dairy cattle, horses and buffaloes. The structure has 12 stalls with capacity for 6 animals each. The major innovation is the installation of electronic troughs with an automated and computerized structure, providing real-time information, which can generate consumption and eating behavior data with more reliability and accuracy. The equipment has feeders supported on a scale, which records in real time the amount of food consumed by each individual animal. Each bull is identified using a chip detected by the antenna present in the trough each time it approaches to feed.
Support to the university community
Accessibility and Inclusion Support Rooms
The Accessibility and Inclusion Support Rooms guarantee a welcoming and safe environment for Libras interpreters who serve deaf students. Their objective is to promote greater accessibility and inclusion on the Campus.
Breastfeeding Support Room
The Breastfeeding Support Room provides a private, quiet and comfortable space for mothers to breastfeed their babies or store their breast milk. “This space is aimed at women, be they teachers, technicians, outsourced workers, who had their baby and finished their maternity leave, thus needing to return to work. There, she can express the milk, store it in the available refrigerator and take it to her child at the end of the day,” said Elisangela Elena Nunes Carvalho, dean of Student and Community Affairs.
University Library Virtual Research Space
The Virtual Research Space aims to support academic activities by offering 60 computers with internet access in an air-conditioned and comfortable environment for study and research. “This space is very important to support academic activities. Mainly for students, but not just for them, as it is open to the entire academic community, serving as support mainly for research, teaching and extension activities”, assured the dean of Undergraduate Studies at UFLA, professor Lucas Amaral de Melo .
Infrastructure and Logistics
Material Receiving and Distribution Center
The Center will be responsible for managing the materials received by the University. Previously, this process was carried out in inappropriate spaces: initially, in a warehouse that had its structure condemned and, later, in the UFLA Technological Park. For UFLA’s Director of Materials and Heritage, Marcelo Adalton Balisa, the new achievement, built from scratch, is an opportunity for evolution. “Now, we have a reference building, which was planned and designed to be a logistical environment capable of meeting the demands of the University. This also increases the responsibility of our Materials and Assets Department, as our processes will need to be improved. We are now able to serve the Institution as a whole and, with the team that DMP has today, I am sure that we will overcome this important challenge in controlling the entry and exit of the materials we receive.” The completion of the Center is already underway so that it can start operating.
Adequacy, reform and expansion of the Agribusiness Management Department
The Department of Agribusiness Management received renovations that expanded and modernized its facilities, providing better working conditions for teachers and students.
There was also adaptation, reform and expansion of the Canaril Experimental and the teaching offices at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences. In the Events Center, partitions, air conditioning and audiovisual structure now allow maximum use of the space for even simultaneous events.

The Central Archive brings together historical documents from UFLA and is open to public consultation. The site aims to preserve the history of the University for society.
Listing of the Architectural Complex of the UFLA Historic Campus
UFLA also celebrated the listing of the Architectural Complex of the Historic Campus, thus recognizing the historical and cultural value of this space of the Institution. “In addition to being the place of origin of UFLA, the Historic Campus houses the main set of historical buildings in the municipality of Lavras. Therefore, it is extremely important that the University recognizes its historical value”, assured UFLA museologist Patrícia Muniz Mendes.
UFLA Publisher
The new location of the UFLA Publishing House was also inaugurated, providing a modern and functional structure. This space aims to support the dissemination of knowledge generated at the University, contributing to the promotion of research, teaching and extension.
