Impacts of Covid-19

It was discovered that the severity of the disease, such as the need for hospitalization and ventilation, and the patient’s age have an influence on the severity.

After the end of the Covid-19 global emergency, decreed by the World Health Organization in May last year, studies continue to try to measure the long-term impacts of the virus.

One of them is the article Post-Covid-19 Respiratory Sequelae Two Years After Hospitalization: An Ambidirectional Study, based on research conducted by USP professor of medicine Carlos Carvalho.

The study followed severe Covid patients admitted to Hospital das Clínicas during the pandemic.

Long-term sequelae

  • The results showed that, after two years of infection, 90% of participants have some respiratory changes;
  • According to the USP Newspapermany of them are serious, such as signs of lung inflammation and signs of fibrosis;
  • After six to 12 months of infection, a small proportion of 2% showed improvement, while 25% showed worsening of the sequelae;
  • Length of hospital stay, invasive mechanical ventilation and patient age also influenced sequelae.

According to Carvalho, it is essential to maintain long-term monitoring of Covid-19 patients, as the data can help predict the impacts on public health in the coming years.
