Lawsuits filed against the company claim that Johnson Baby Powder caused cancer; the company tried to negotiate other times
Johnson & Johnson proposes to pay $6.5 billion over 25 years as part of a reorganization plan for subsidiary LLT Management LLC. The objective is to seek an agreement to end 99.75% of the pending lawsuits against the company and its affiliates in the United States. The announcement was made on Wednesday (May 1, 2024). Other values have already been presented by the company. In April last year, it proposed paying US$8.9 billion to settle lawsuits alleging that one of its products, Johnson Baby Powder, caused cancer.
According to the lawsuits, talc caused users to develop ovarian cancer, through use for feminine hygiene, or mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the lungs and other organs.
Then, in January of this year, Johnson & Johnson also announced that it would pay around US$700 million to settle an investigation, filed by 42 North American states, into the marketing and marketing of its baby powder.
The allegations contributed to declining sales of J&J’s baby powder, leading the company to stop selling its talc-based products in 2020. In 2022, J&J announced plans to cease sales of the item worldwide.
