President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) announced that he sanctioned the Legal Framework for the Games late this Friday afternoon (03). As a result, the bill that regulates the video game industry in Brazil is in effect and promises to bring investment in the sector to the country.

Lula celebrated the approval through his official profile on https://twitter.com/LulaOficial/status/1786491335484047431. According to him, this brings “principles and guidelines” for the economic sustainability of the sector, as well as “protection” of children and adolescents.

I sanctioned the bill that creates the legal framework for the electronic games industry. With this, principles and guidelines for the economic sustainability of the sector will be established, including the interaction of electronic games with specific legislation in the cultural sector, tax incentives extended to the segment and guidelines for the protection of children and adolescents.

What is involved in the Games Legal Framework?

The Games Legal Framework is a bill originally authored by federal deputy Kim Kataguiri (União-SP), but which went through several revisions until it was approved by the Chamber of Deputies in April this year. With it, the manufacturing, import, marketing and development of electronic games in Brazil is regulated.

Furthermore, electronic game devs are now included in laws to encourage national cultural production, such as the Rouanet Law and the Audiovisual Law. This will reduce taxes such as the “Tax on Industrialized Products” (IPI) on equipment for creating games, thus stimulating this sector.

It is important to mention what “electronic games” are for the Games Legal Framework. This definition includes console games, virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), augmented reality (AR), streaming games and software. Don’t enter in this field fantasy games and games of chance.
