Braga: Sculpture by Joana Vasconcelos will be installed in front of the Market

A new artistic attraction is about to delight the inhabitants and visitors of Braga.

This is the sculpture “l’Il Be Your Mirror #1, 2018”, by renowned Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, which will be installed in Praça do Comércio, in front of the Municipal Market, and will be on display until December 2025. The title of the work, taken from the song of the same name by the Velvet Underground and Nico, also served as the theme for Joana Vasconcelos’ solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

The official inauguration is scheduled for May 9th, at 11:30 am, and will be attended by several personalities from the city’s institutional, cultural and tourist scene, including the artist herself, Joana Vasconcelos.

The sculpture, provided to the Municipality of Braga by Sonae Sierra, is part of the company’s collection and aims to promote cultural and tourist interaction in the area surrounding the Municipal Market.

“The inclusion of this work of art in Praça do Comércio aims to revitalize the Municipal Market, promoting greater connection with the community and offering more cultural, gastronomic and tourist experiences”, highlights the municipality in a statement.

The piece can be viewed free of charge and, throughout the exhibition period, several activities will be organized to allow the public to learn about Joana Vasconcelos’ creative process.

For the artist, having one of her works on display in the city of Braga is a source of great joy.

“This piece in particular portrays the moment in which the artist reveals himself, allowing us to show who we truly are”, says Joana Vasconcelos.

The sculpture “l’Il Be Your Mirror #1, 2018” is made up of 255 baroque bronze frames, designed and decorated by the artist herself, and 510 overlapping mirrors, creating a Venetian mask that dialogues with the reflection of the surrounding environment.
